Chapter 02

ENFAC#3 4th Floor Library

The library was located on the fourth floor but spanned two floors, featuring a balcony along the second level’s interior, accessible only by stairs. The windows were actually screens displaying outdoor scenes and weather, which could be changed to day, night, or rain upon request. Both floors boasted numerous desks and comfortable chairs for extended research sessions. The shelves of this expansive library were filled with books on a wide range of topics, including history, sciences, religion, and various occult subjects.

Dr. Vale made a conscious effort to ease his mind and push thoughts of Psikorp aside as he navigated toward the library. Settling into a comfortable chair at one of the balcony tables, he positioned himself to observe Ms. Wilson’s arrival.

Every aspect of Claire’s appearance, from the carefully selected colors of her attire to the fragrance she wore, seemed meticulously chosen for their inherent influences. Though subtle, one couldn’t help but wonder if this careful curation was entirely subconscious, although such a notion seemed unlikely.

She appeared noticeably tense, her demeanor betraying a sense of unease, yet the underlying cause remained elusive. Dr. Vale watched as she made her way inside and stopped at the desk to ask the staff for assistance. Like the other recruits, she was directed up the staircase to where he was waiting.

Claire took in the library as she made her way toward him, her eyes scanning the small sectional signs with a curious and attentive expression. She lit up like a kid in a candy store as she paused at one cross-section at the bottom of the stairs, looking over the titles with genuine excitement. Stubbornly, she carried her luggage up the stairs with her as well, much to Vale’s amusement.

As she reached the top of the stairs, her expression changed as if something unseen had drawn her attention, and she scanned the area curiously before taking a cautious step forward. Her steps slowed as she made her way to Dr. Vale, even though she spotted him offering a wave. She wasn’t entirely sure why, just that something felt… off. It had been a long time since she’d felt anything like that, and she couldn’t quite place the feeling, but it put her on guard.
